A man died and two other people were hospitalized in a fiery crash involving a semi-truck on the southbound 5 Freeway in Irvine on Saturday morning, Sept. 24, authorities said.
All southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway were closed south of Jamboree Road and the carpool and fast lanes on the northbound side were also shut down for hours, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash was reported just after 4:05 a.m. and initially involved two cars, according to a CHP log. The semi-truck then crashed into one of the cars, overturned and caught fire.

Orange County firefighters responded to put out the flames just before 4:10 a.m., officials said.
The semi driver was able to get out of the truck after it overturned, according to the CHP log.
The man who died was Daniel Franco, 59, of Lake Forest, according to Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Hylton. It wasn’t immediately known which vehicle Franco was in.
The lanes were reopened at just past 12:45 p.m. the CHP said.
