The California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down all northbound 405 lanes off MacArthur Boulevard in Irvine on Tuesday, Jan. 3, after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the freeway, officials said.
Around 7:30 p.m., a male pedestrian ran across the southbound 405 and was hit after he crossed into the northbound HOV lane near MacArthur, according to CHP logs. It was not immediately clear what vehicle hit him, the CHP said.
A SIG alert was issued around 8:00 p.m. ordering a hard closure on the northbound lanes. Traffic was being diverted, according to Caltrans.
The shutdown remained in effect as of 9:15 p.m., with traffic backed up to Jamboree Road.
It was not immediately clear why the victim was running on the freeway. It also was not known whether other pedestrians were on the freeway or other injuries occurred.
