Irvine police detained two people after a suspicious hazmat incident at an apartment complex in Irvine prompted further investigation.
On Thursday, Feb. 2, personnel from the Orange County Fire Authority responded to a report of a natural gas smell at 7 pm at The Village apartment complex, which led to a full hazardous material response. Police were called in after firefighters said something was suspicious about the incident, according to Irvine Police Sgt. Karie Davis. Orange County sheriff’s deputies also were also called to the scene.
Firefighters conducted chemical readings inside the residence and ventilated the space located in the 4200 block of Spectrum, Davis said. A medical evaluation was performed on two occupants, who refused medical attention and were later detained by police. The hazard incident was contained to a single unit and there were no evacuations, officials said.
Police have requested a warrant in order to investigate the chemical that may have caused the incident.
