Previews of five of the top second-round games Tuesday in the CIF Southern Section baseball playoffs:
DIVISION 1
HUNTINGTON BEACH (21-8) VS. VILLA PARK (19-10)
Where, when: Villa Park High, 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: Surf League champion Huntington Beach, which is No. 2 in the Orange County Top 25, beat Warren 3-2 in the first round of the playoffs on Brian Trujillo’s walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning. Oilers senior shortstop Dean Carpentier drove in the other two runs. Villa Park senior Zach Brown, who signed with Ohio State, is the probable starting pitcher for the Crestview League champions, who are No. 7 in the county rankings. Brown is 5-2 with a 2.31 ERA. The Spartans defeated Damien 3-0 in the first round.
HARVARD-WESTLAKE (22-8) VS. ORANGE LUTHERAN (20-10-1)
Where, when: Hart Park, Orange, 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: Harvard-Westlake finished second to Division 1 top-seeded Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the Mission League. The Wolverines are No. 8 in CalHiSports.com’s state rankings that have Orange Lutheran at No. 7. They beat Palos Verdes 1-0 in a 14-inning, first-round game. Orange Lutheran, which finished in a tie for third place in the Trinity League, beat Arlington 8-3 in the first round. Senior third baseman Casey Borba, who signed with Texas, homered and drove in two runs and junior outfielder Derek Curiel had three hits.
DIVISION 2
AQUINAS (24-4) VS. CAPISTRANO VALLEY CHRISTIAN (22-10)
Where, when: San Juan Sports Park, 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: Capistrano Valley Christian beat Temecula Valley 7-1 in the first round of the playoffs. Senior shortstop Hayden Carlson is batting .393 with 24 stolen bases. He signed with Indiana. Senior pitcher Hunter Long, a Michigan State signee, has 104 strikeouts with only 14 walks. The Falcons were the Ambassador League champions and are No. 7 in the CalHiSports.com state rankings. They beat Moorpark 7-3 in the first round.
DIVISION 3
EDISON (18-9) VS. YORBA LINDA (15-12-1)
Where, when: Yorba Linda High, 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: Edison, No. 13 in the county rankings, went 9-0 in the Wave League to take the league championship. The Chargers defeated Temescal Canyon 8-2 in the first round. UCLA-signed senior infielder Brandon Winokur has nine home runs and is batting. 373. Senior infielder Gavin Gayle is batting .407. Yorba Linda won the North Hills League championship. The Mustangs beat Centennial of Corona 6-2 in the first round.
DIVISION 4
NORTHWOOD (18-10) VS. CANYON (17-12)
Where, when: Canyon High, 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: Northwood finished second to Woodbridge in the Pacific Coast League. The third-seeded Wolverines beat St. Bonaventure 7-0 in the first round of the playoffs. Rylan Littlejohn drove in two runs in the victory. Robert Bangs and Casey Euper teamed for the shutout. Canyon finished third in the four-team North Hills League. The Comanches defeated Oak Hills 11-2 in the first round. Senior Cohen Gomez has team highs of 25 hits and 18 RBIs.
