A 64-year-old man was fatally struck by a Metrolink train in Irvine on Monday, police said.
Police responded to the area of 170 Technology Drive around 7:36 a.m. after a Metrolink train heading northbound toward Los Angeles struck a pedestrian, later identified as 64-year-old Michael Albert Mason, who was homeless, the Irvine Police Department said in a statement.
According to a press release, the train engineer reportedly saw Mason standing on the wooden planks near the outside of the tracks. Mason waved at the engineer, who began slowing down the locomotive and sounding the horn as the pedestrian turned around in what appeared to be an attempt to walk away. He was hit by the train and died at the scene, police said.
Tracks between Irvine and Tustin were temporarily closed, causing significant delays.

Mason was a homeless veteran whose last known address was Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Police do not believe the incident was a suicide, said Sgt. Karie Davis.
