A 23-year-old Beaumont man was arrested on Wednesday, June 14, on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman near the UC Irvine campus last weekend in an attack that was captured on surveillance video, authorities said.
The man, who was arrested on suspicion of sexual battery and false imprisonment, allegedly approached a woman crossing the road at Graduate and Scholarship near UC Irvine’s North Campus on Saturday, June 10, according to Irvine police Sgt. Karie Davies.
The department released surveillance video of the moment leading up to the suspect attempting to restrain and grope the woman from behind as she walked across a road before he fled in a white sedan.
The suspect was experiencing homelessness at the time of the attack and had been couch-surfing at various friends’ homes. He was arrested at a friends house in Laguna Hills on Wednesday, Davies said, though the friend was unaware of the alleged assault.
The man also has a warrant for a hit-and-run collision.
