Free dump day for OC residents is Saturday at Irvine park and ride lot

Got an old mattress or a cumbersome entertainment cabinet that needs to go?

Orange County residents can haul their bulky items to a free dump day from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, March 23 in Irvine.

The event includes free shredding with households limited to four boxes each.

Caltrans will be at the Jeffrey Road Park & Ride lot, just off the 5 freeway, where residents can drive up and dump their goods. The event does not require appointment, according to state Sen. Dave Min.

Pro tip: Get there early because when capacity is reached, the event ends.

The dump day is being paid for by the Clean California Initiative, a $1.2 billion fund aimed at keeping local roads and waterways free of litter.

According to a report by Caltrans, the agency collected 438,756 cubic yards (or 7,386 tons) of litter from the state highway system in 2022. Caltrans says trash pickup in 2022 marked a 244% increase in litter removal compared with a 2020 baseline of 267,000 cubic yards of trash.

The transportation agency says it held 51 free dump day in the state in 2022, collecting 4,908 tires, 1,340 mattresses, 247 pallets of e-waste, and 649 appliances.

If your bulky furniture is too good to trash, Goodwill of Orange County will divert it from landfill to those in need, according to Min.
