A United Parcel Service driver was fatally shot while sitting in his truck in Irvine afternoon on Thursday, May 16 and police later took a suspect into custody.
The UPS driver, believed to be on-duty, was shot around 3 p.m. in an industrial area near Chrysler and Fleming, Irvine Police spokesperson Kyle Oldoerp said.
NBC Los Angeles reported that the driver was sitting in his truck, taking a break, when someone in a car pulled up and shot him multiple times. No packages were stolen, leading police to believe the driver was targeted.
Irvine police later surrounded a possible suspect. Video from the scene showed a pair of Irvine police SWAT vehicles pinning a silver pickup in place alongside Santiago Canyon Road in Orange, with the suspect apparently still in the driver’s seat. Officers also were positioned on a hillside above the standoff.
After deploying chemical agents and a police dog, police took the suspect into custody.
