Police are searching for three men after a man was fatally shot multiple times at midday Thursday in a rare car-to-car shooting on a residential street in Irvine.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 12:37 p.m. on Athel Avenue and Sego Street, where they found a man on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds in the upper torso area, and being attended to by nearby residents. The victim, who lives in South Orange County, was hospitalized and later died from his injuries, according to police.

“Things like this don’t usually happen in residential neighborhoods, specifically in Irvine, in broad daylight,” Sgt. Karie Davies told freelance news videographer OC Hawk.

She said there was no indication the shooting involved road rage, but she did not elaborate.

Callers to 911 said they could hear a man outside screaming for help shortly before police arrived, Davies said.

The victim was reportedly in the passenger seat of a black Mercedes sedan when he was shot by the passenger of a white Honda Accord or a Civic. Police are actively searching for the two drivers and the passenger involved.
