A misprinted UC Irvine sweatshirt that some Costco stores appeared to have recently stocked and then removed from shelves the same day quickly got the attention of the university’s students and alumni on social media.
Tweets bounced around looking for the merchandise, which in posted photos read “UC Urvine Anteaters.”

Class of 2010 alumna Vivian Le said she never purchased UCI merchandise while she attended the university, but would “definitely buy this” and is confident other students would do the same if UCI or another vendor were to release the design, saying it hits for “millennial and Gen-Z internet humor.”
Many publicly lamented the sweatshirts no longer being available for purchase, and some even begged those who’d discovered them to consider putting them up for resale.
Costco started selling uci hoodies but misspelled Irvine from UCI
Le checked eBay immediately after seeing the sweatshirts on Twitter, but didn’t see any listings.
A UCI spokesperson said the university “was made aware of the defective merchandise over the weekend at three Costco stores in Orange County,” and that the stores “took immediate action to have (the sweatshirts) removed.”
“UCI regularly works with vendors and on merchandising, design, manufacturing and retail. Although there are different places in the merchandising chain where a defect may occur, it is a rare occurrence,” the spokesperson added.
Costco’s administrative offices declined to comment on the misprinted merchandise.
