Sen. Dave Min is running for California’s 47th congressional district — with the backing of Rep. Katie Porter who currently holds the seat.
An Irvine Democrat, Min has represented a large area of Orange County in the California Senate since 2020 where he has focused on gun crime prevention and environmental issues. And it’s his record that his campaign is focused on as it gets underway.
“I began my career holding Wall Street accountable during the financial crisis and protecting families from foreclosure,” Min said. “In the State Senate, I have fought for bold legislation to challenge politics as usual.”
Former Democratic Rep. Harley Rouda and former Assembly GOP leader Scott Baugh have also said they’re running for the seat.
But Porter, who was first out of the gate with her U.S. Senate bid, said she’s backing Min, her former competitor for Congress in 2018.
“I know how much Dave cares about our country and Orange County,” Porter said. “I’ve been impressed with his record in the California State Senate, where he has been a progressive leader on issues like gun violence prevention, reproductive rights and environmental protection.”
“Dave has proven that he can win in this area while delivering on a progressive agenda with real results,” Porter said.
California’s coastal 47th congressional district includes Irvine, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and part of Huntington Beach — an area Min already largely represents in the legislature. It was earmarked this past cycle by national Republicans as a potential pickup for their party, but Porter was able to beat Baugh to hold onto her seat.
Before Porter’s announcement set off a flurry of activity for CA-47, Min was preparing a reelection bid to the Senate — and to face fellow Democratic Sen. Josh Newman of Fullerton thanks to redistricting.
A member of budget, transportation and energy committees in the legislature, Min is a former UCI law professor who has given testimony to Congress on banking and housing policy issues. He championed legislation to get gun shows banned, first on OC’s fairgrounds and then statewide.
With so few Asian Americans in the legislature, Min has become a leader against rising hate crimes, particularly toward Asians.
